Today's singer is going to blow you away. If you happen to not to know him that is. If you do know him you are aware he is going to blow you away anyways.
If you have been waiting for someone who sings beautifully technically, who is so much aware of his voice, who virtually destroys the system with what he does, well - the waiting is over.
Today it is going to be about Dimash.
0:32 (SING KNOWINGLY. THE BEST VOCAL ADVICE)
0:38 Today I have chosen a composition titled "Sinful Passion". I know that some of you have been waiting for the "SOS" or "Opera 2" analysis, but believe me - there is absolutely nothing missing in the song. There are so many beautiful colours in there. I have chosen it not without a reason. In my opininon - there is everything best of what Dimash is capable of singing there, everything best what one could say about him, but this is also a very nice piece as a whole. There is so much of a song in it really. As opposed to a few of his other pieces which are kind of a vocal karate... I played Dimash to a few friends of mine - people who are not singers, vocal coaches or musicians. And when listening to some of his works they claimed that "it is cool but a little bit tiring in the long run". Yes - all these high notes might seem a little bit wearisome. Me being a vocal coach and my fellow colleagues are so hyped about them, because it is a technique, because it is the top of the top, but an average listener... Anyways - I am curious myself. Let me know in the comments below what YOU think about Dimash and about what he sings like. There is going to be a survey at the end of this clip too. That's why /I have chosen/ this very piece.
OK. I invite you. Good morning Mr Dimash.
1:55 Fangirls...
2:24 There we find ourselves in his chest register. And just see how many changes he is making here. It is a conscious choice. He is chosing colours of his voice, of what he wants to sound like. There are moments when there is so much air in it. And there was this moment in the third phrase when he started... even from this sort of vocal fry so that it would sound like "...". Full vocal folds' closure. He enters nicely, it closes all along and there we have a full nice chest sound. But there are these 'over-aerated' moments. If we did not know that this is Dimash, if we thought that this is a singer of some sort and if we did not hear this folds' closure, we would say: "OK, he is not closing his vocal folds properly in his chest register, there are going to be consequences once he hits the higher notes, probably there are going to be problems then" etc. "It is non-technical". But this is a different issue here. He is playing with the colour and he is doing it very nicely. He is fully aware of what he wants to achieve.
3:32 Exactly. The full closure.
Note: vibrato "..." sounding much more classical rather than popular.
4:03 Yes - at one time they are closed, then it is breathy...
4:22 There is also so much reverberation here, a delay effect which carries his voice even more.
See, now we hit the A, H. Chest register, 'aerated' again. Again - a lot of air flows through vocal folds. The balance between the amount of air and vocal folds' closure is now in favour of the air. There is a little closure, there is a lot of air. Again - if we were singing like that for a long time and if it were our prime technique (the only thing we can do) we would not get very far. But we know that Dimash is doing it knowingly. It is a great example of a vocalist who sings knowingly. You asked for it - you have it.
5:08 That's it.
5:20 "..." See - these very classically sounding vowels, especially the second one which was hit in the second phrase, this "Aaa". So as I said. The first phrase was sung with the 'over-breathy' sound. And now the second phrase, the same notes exactly, and he is already singing in his nice, closed chest register.
6:10 Yes, especially this "только". Again - an 'aerated' sound. Of course there were / there are moments where the balance is better. Now there already is a head register. We have E, the highest G sound, and as I said - there are moments where the balance is better, where it is nice melodiously, where there is not so much air, but still there is this "только" when there was exaggeratedly much air there. But notice that he keeps being consistent over the tone, that the voice sounds consistently, equally, there are no drastic changes in it, even though there is quite a lot of air in it, but there is full control over the sound, it is not chaotic. Most of the times this 'over-breathy' sound is very chaotic, a vocalist is not able to fully control it. Dimash is controlling it the way it ought to be.
7:32 Nice ornament added in the end. See - that's what I said. As previously when the first phrase was 'over-aerated' and the second one nicely, technically closed. We have the exact same case here. The first phrase - a lot of air, the light head /register/, the second time - everything very agile, very good technically, nice mix, see yourselves - he is hitting the A note easily, no problems, no breakdowns, no flips, no tightening. There is nothing so that we might say: "OK, he helped himself a little, it was not necessarily technical, but it was cool". No, no. It was perfectly technically.
8:16 Hitting the note. See yourselves. It is already a high note - A, A4-H4, these are already extremely difficult notes for a male voice. He is singing intensively and then he is letting it go. But he is not letting it go like "ahh..." and then he fades away, loses his pitch, the vocal folds get open. No - again there is a full control, the closure is not that strong, more air is flowing, but the placement stays the same, it is still equal, straigtht forward, in the same manner. Great. What else could it be?
8:53 See yourselves. There is no intensive consonants attack. There are entering like that "...".

😄😄 Pozdrawiam serdecznie! - A co powiesz o fenomenie Marcelito Pomoy; The Prayer??
